LA STORIA		HISTORY
Im Jahr 1956, in einer kleinen Wohnung in Arezzo, begann Melys Strickwaren anzufertigen. Zehn Jahre später wurde aus der häuslichen Werkstatt eine kleine Firma, die in den Vorort Olmo umzog, wo auch heute noch in einem neuen modernen Gebäude die Herstellung von Cashmere Strickwaren fortgesetzt wird. Der Name Melys stammt von ihrer Gründerin, die mit ihrer Familie aus Frankreich nach Italien zurück gekehrt ist und dann das Handwerk der Strickerin gelernt hat. Nachdem sie meinen Großvater, der Busfahrer war - kennen gelernt und geheiratet hatte, machte sie sich selbstständig, im Sog des wirtschaftlichen Aufschwungs dieser Jahre. In den sechziger Jahren kehrt sie nach Frankreich zurück um ihre Waren den Kaufhäusern La Faiette anzubieten, mit Erfolg und Anerkennung ihrer Arbeit.		Melys started producing knitwear in 1956 in a small apartment in Arezzo. Ten years later the home laboratory turned into a small factory and was moved to Olmo, where, in a new seat, the manufacture of Cashmere is still carried on. The company name, Melys, comes from the name of its founder, a woman who decided to learn the knitter’s trade, after coming back to Italy from France with her family. She met and got married to my grandfather, who used to be a tourist bus driver, and started running her own business during the years of the economic recovery that was taking place in Italy. In the early 60’s she came back to France, where she successfully proposed her knitwear to the Lafayette stores.
LA FAMIGLIA, LE PERSONE E IL LAVORO		FAMILY, PEOPLE AND WORK
Nach einem halben Jahrhundert hat sich viel verändert, aber einige Gesichter bestehen immer noch zwischen Wirklichkeit und Erinnerungen. Die Gründerfamilie ist inzwischen bei der dritten Generation und die vierte krabbelt zwischen Cashmire-Zwirn und Maschinenlärm herum. Die Firma und die Familie bestehen nur dank vieler treuer Mitarbeiter. Namen und Ähnlichkeiten wiederholen sich: zwischen Müttern und Töchtern, Mann und Frau, Sohn und Mutter, Nichte und Tante. Dann die Pauseglocke, die Frauen rennen nach Hause wo sie am Morgen schon den Topf mit dem Mittagessen auf den Ofen gestellt haben. Melys glaubt seit jeher an die Fabrik als Produktionskern, und an deren Entwicklung zum Dienst am Kunden sowie der Angestellten und Mitarbeiter. Ein Ergebnis ist unser neuer Web-Dienst, MelysME, in dem man seinen Cashmere-Pullover persönlich gestalten - und ihn sich preisgünstig nach Hause schicken lassen kann, mit der Garantie beste italienische Qualität und Handarbeitsware zu erhalten. Melys ist heute ein blühendes Unternehmen, welches moderneTechnologie und Tradition verbindet, in täglicher Eintracht mit seinen Mitarbeitern.		After more than half a century, many things have changed, but some of the faces are still there, between past and present. The factory is now run by the third generation of the family, while the forth one is now growing up between the Cashmere distaffs and the metallic noise of machinery. This is true not only for the factory owners, but also for the families of many of the employees. Family names and resemblances often recur between mother and daughter, husband and wife, mother and son, aunt and niece. When the bell rings, the women walk back to their houses for lunch. In the morning, before leaving, they had left on the cooker a pan already filled with water. Melys has always believed in the idea of the factory as a productive cell, and in the evolution of it to the benefit of both its customers and its employees. This is testified by the new web service, Melys ME, which allows people to have fun personalizing their Cashmere sweater and have it delivered straight to their houses at a excellent price, without renouncing to the best Cashmere and to Italian manufacture. Nowadays, Melys is an up-to-date company that combines technology and tradition in the everyday relationship with its employees, who are the real buttonhole flower of its production.
LA NATURA		NATURE
Die Fabrikräume sind von der Helle der umliegenden Natur erleuchtet, wenn man aus dem Fenster schaut kann man die bebauten Felder und die gotische Kathedrale der der Zypressen bewundern. Das gesamte Dach der Fabrik ist mit Fotovoltar.Zellen bestückt, sodass eine moderne Fotovoltaikanlage für den notwendigen Strom sorgt. Melys hat sich schon immer um die Umweltprobleme gekümmert, im Jahr 2001 studiert sie ein System über vegetale Färbungsmethode und ersteht eine Anlage zur manuellen Cashmere-Färbung. Diese wird in dem Agriturismus „La Campana“ installiert wo schon seit Jahren die typischen italienischen Färbungspflanzen angebaut werden. Aus diesem workshop entsteht KOS PROJECT, heute im Warenzeichen Melys assimiliert, mit der Erweiterung K2, das die zweite Phase des Projekts darstellt. Es ist die Seele Organic der Welt Melys, sauber und rein, welche handgemachte und handgefärbte, mit naturfarbenen Mitteln bearbeitete, Waren anbietet. Aber K2 ist auch die von Italienern eroberte Bergspitze mit welcher man auch heute noch eine extreme und pathetische Beziehung hat.		The colours of the surrounding nature are reflected in the light inside the laboratory, from where you can see cultivated fields and a cypress gothic cathedral. The entire surface of the factory is covered with photovoltaic panels for the production of electrical energy. Melys has always paid attention to environmental problems, to the point that in 2001 it carried out a study on vegetable dyeing, and purchased a hand dyeing system for Cashmere, that was installed at the farm house “La Campana”, where typical Italian dyeing plants have been cultivated for several years. This workshop gave birth to the KOS PROJECT, that is nowadays merged in the brand Melys, together with the branch K2, representing the second stage of the initial project. This is the Organic soul of the Melys world, that is radically clean and that proposes hand made items, hand dyed in the utmost respect for nature and for human life. But K2 represents also the mountain that was conquered by Italy, and where the relationship with nature is still absolute and equal.
IL PRODOTTO E IL FILATO		PRODUCTS AND KNITTING YARN
Aber Melys ist noch viel mehr! Es ist das Warenzeichen der „gut gemachten“ Dinge, wie man früher sagte, dieser Sachen die lange Zeit halten mußten. Diese die von den Menschen erzählen die sie tragen, von ihren Gewohnheiten und ihrer Art zu leben. Früher gab es in jedem Haus auf dem Land eine Strickmaschine und alle Frauen konnten Stricken oder Häkeln. Diese Tradition besteht noch heute im Haus Melys wo die Frauen mit Leidenschaft und Stolz tagtäglich seit 35 Jahren diese Hand-Arbeit verrichten, ein Handwerk das ihnen von der Oma spielerisch und traditionsbewußt beigebracht wurde. Das Häkeln war eine Art Meditation, ein persönlicher Augenblick um sich zu enspannen und die Aussteuer für die Tochter zu erstellen. Ich denke an Graziella; von ihr sagt man daß sie mit ihren Händen alles schaffen kann, oder an Delfina die in ihrer freien Zeit aus Restware die wunderschönsten Teile herstellen kann. Die Kultur des Sparens, nichts vergeuden, aus allem noch etwas herausholen und bearbeiten. Aber auch die Kultur des Erzeugens, während der Verarbeitung verschiedene Lösungen zu bedenken. Da keine industriellen Mengen hergestellt werden, wird jeder Artikel verschieden bearbeitet, man lernt immer etwas Neues dazu. Der Cashmere sowie alle anderen Materialien werden in den besten Betrieben eingekauft, in Italien und Schottland. Alles strengstens langfaserig und extrafein um dem Träger die Wärme, die Weichheit und die Leichtigkeit des Cashmere zu vermitteln, und der Hände die ihm die Form gaben. Jedes Teil wird wird in allen Details von Hand fertiggestellt denn wir glauben daß der Wert in den kleinen Dingen steckt.		But Melys is much more! It is the brand of “well made” things, as people used to say in the past; of those things that had to be long lasting. Those “good” things whose wear and tear would tell something about the people who had worn them, about their habits and ways of life. Once, every house in the countryside had a knitting machine and every woman was able to knit and crochet. This tradition is nowadays part of Melys and is kept up by women who have been working by hand with passion and pride every day for more than 35 years; women who had learnt their trade from their grandmothers for fun, tradition and culture. Crocheting used to be a sort of meditation, a private time when women could relax and prepare the bottom drawer for their daughters. I’m thinking about Graziella; people say she can do any sort of things with her hands. Or about Delfina, who is able to create, during her spare time, the most beautiful things with production rejects. Melys is the culture of saving, of avoiding waists, of recycling what can be recycled, of changing the way of using things depending on the needs; but also the culture of producing while conceiving and proposing different solutions to be adopted in the carrying out of different tasks. The non-industrial quantities of each item allow the manufacture to be always different. The manufacture, therefore, needs to be learnt and understood from time to time. Cashmere, as the other raw materials, is selected in the best factories of Italy and Scotland. The fibre is rigorously long and extremely fine, in order to give the warmth, the softness and the lightness of Cashmere, and of the hands that shaped it. Each item is finished.
DER STIL		STYLE
Der Stil des Hauses Melys ist zwei Engländern Lois & Kristofer anvertraut, dieItalienfans sind und eine schlichte Eleganz reich an Einzelheiten erfunden haben, die jedem einzelnen Kleidungsstück eine besondere Note gibt, sich darin wohl zu fühlen und es immer neu zu entdecken. Aber man kann auch den französischen Einfluss darin erkennen. Die Donna Melys ist fein, kultiviert und selbstbewußt; sie liebt keine Übertriebenheit und ihre Kleidung stellt einen mentalen Zustand dar, und weniger einen körperlichen.		Melys owes its style to two English stylists, Lois and Kristopher, who love Italy and have a taste for an elegant but rich in details sobriety, that makes each item become something new to discover and wear, something that makes you feel good. But Melys style is also influenced by the original relationship with France and Paris. A Melys woman is delicate, learned and discreet; she does not like excesses, and clothing represents for her a mental state more than physical one.
