LA STORIA		HISTORY
Melys ha iniziato ha produrre maglieria nel 1956 in un piccolo appartamento ad Arezzo. Da laboratorio domestico diventerà piccola azienda dieci anni dopo, trasferendosi nel paese di Olmo dove ancora oggi, in una nuova sede continua la lavorazione del Cashmere. Il nome Melys nasce dalla sua fondatrice, la quale tornata in Italia dalla Francia con la famiglia, decide di imparare il mestiere della magliettaia. Incontrato e sposato, mio nonno che di lavoro faceva l’autista di pullman granturismo, si mette in proprio cavalcando gli anni della ripresa economica italiana. Nei primi anni sessanta torna in Francia per proporre le proprie maglie ai grandi magazzini La Faiette, dove subito trova il consenso al proprio impegno.		Melys started producing knitwear in 1956 in a small apartment in Arezzo. Ten years later the home laboratory turned into a small factory and was moved to Olmo, where, in a new seat, the manufacture of Cashmere is still carried on. The company name, Melys, comes from the name of its founder, a woman who decided to learn the knitter’s trade, after coming back to Italy from France with her family. She met and got married to my grandfather, who used to be a tourist bus driver, and started running her own business during the years of the economic recovery that was taking place in Italy. In the early 60’s she came back to France, where she successfully proposed her knitwear to the Lafayette stores.
LA FAMIGLIA, LE PERSONE E IL LAVORO		FAMILY, PEOPLE AND WORK
Dopo oltre mezzo secolo tante cose sono cambiate, ma alcuni volti sono ancora qui fra realtà e ricordi. La famiglia all’interno della fabbrica, è giunta in terza generazione e già la quarta sta crescendo fra rocche di Cashmere e il rumore metallico delle macchine. Azienda e famiglia non solo quella dei titolari, ma anche quelle di tanti dipendenti. Cognomi e somiglianze che si ripetono: tra madre e figlie, marito e moglie, figlio e madre, nipote e zia. Poi il suono della campanella, le donne che a piedi vanno a mangiare a casa dove prima di uscire, hanno lasciato la pentola, con l’acqua pronta nei fornelli. Melys ha sempre creduto nella fabbrica come cellula produttiva, e nell’evoluzione di questa al servizio sia del cliente che dei dipendenti. Ne è testimone il nuovo servizio web, Melys ME, nel quale divertendosi, si può personalizzare la propria maglia di Cashmere e riceverla direttamente a casa, ad un ottimo prezzo, senza con ciò rinunciare al miglior Cashmere e alla manifattura italiana. Oggi Melys è un’azienda moderna, che coniuga tecnologia e tradizione, nel quotidiano rapporto con i suoi dipendenti, vero e imprescindibile fiore all’occhiello dell’attività.		After more than half a century, many things have changed, but some of the faces are still there, between past and present. The factory is now run by the third generation of the family, while the forth one is now growing up between the Cashmere distaffs and the metallic noise of machinery. This is true not only for the factory owners, but also for the families of many of the employees. Family names and resemblances often recur between mother and daughter, husband and wife, mother and son, aunt and niece. When the bell rings, the women walk back to their houses for lunch. In the morning, before leaving, they had left on the cooker a pan already filled with water. Melys has always believed in the idea of the factory as a productive cell, and in the evolution of it to the benefit of both its customers and its employees. This is testified by the new web service, Melys ME, which allows people to have fun personalizing their Cashmere sweater and have it delivered straight to their houses at a excellent price, without renouncing to the best Cashmere and to Italian manufacture. Nowadays, Melys is an up-to-date company that combines technology and tradition in the everyday relationship with its employees, who are the real buttonhole flower of its production.
LA NATURA		NATURE
I colori della natura circostante riflettono la luce all’interno del laboratorio, dove alzando la testa si può scorgere i campi coltivati e la cattedrale gotica di cipressi. Sopra l’intera superficie della fabbrica si trovano i pannelli fotovoltaici per la produzione di energia elettrica. Melys è sempre stata attenta alle questioni ambientali, tanto che nel 2001 fa uno studio sulla tintura vegetale, e acquista un impianto per la coloritura manuale del Cashmere, che installerà presso l’agriturismo “La Campana” dove da anni si coltivano le piante tintorie tipiche del territorio italiano. Da questo workshop nasce KOS PROJECT oggi assimilato nel marchio Melys con l’estensione K2 che rappresenta la seconda fase di quel progetto iniziale. E’ l’anima Organic del mondo Melys quella radicalmente pulita, quella che propone cose fatte a mano, tinte a mano nel pieno rispetto della natura e della persona. Ma K2 è anche la montagna conquistata dall’Italia, dove ancora oggi si ha un rapporto estremo e paritetico con la natura.		The colours of the surrounding nature are reflected in the light inside the laboratory, from where you can see cultivated fields and a cypress gothic cathedral. The entire surface of the factory is covered with photovoltaic panels for the production of electrical energy. Melys has always paid attention to environmental problems, to the point that in 2001 it carried out a study on vegetable dyeing, and purchased a hand dyeing system for Cashmere, that was installed at the farm house “La Campana”, where typical Italian dyeing plants have been cultivated for several years. This workshop gave birth to the KOS PROJECT, that is nowadays merged in the brand Melys, together with the branch K2, representing the second stage of the initial project. This is the Organic soul of the Melys world, that is radically clean and that proposes hand made items, hand dyed in the utmost respect for nature and for human life. But K2 represents also the mountain that was conquered by Italy, and where the relationship with nature is still absolute and equal.
IL PRODOTTO E IL FILATO		PRODUCTS AND KNITTING YARN
Ma Melys è molto di più! E’ il marchio delle cose “ben fatte” come si diceva una volta, di quelle cose che dovevano durare nel tempo. Quelle cose “buone”, la cui usura parlava della persona che le indossava, delle sue usanze, dei suoi modi di vivere. Una volta in ogni casa di campagna, c’era una macchina da maglieria e tutte le donne sapevano lavorare con i ferri o fare l’uncinetto. Questa tradizione è oggi dentro Melys, detenuta da donne che con passione e orgoglio lavorano a mano quotidianamente da oltre trentacinque anni. Donne il cui mestiere è stato insegnato per gioco, tradizione e cultura dalla nonna. Fare l’uncinetto era una forma di meditazione, un momento personale per rilassarsi e preparare il corredo alla figlia. Penso a Graziella; dicono di lei che con le mani è capace di fare di tutto, o a Delfina che nei ritagli di tempo con gli scarti delle lavorazioni riesce a creare cose meravigliose. La cultura del risparmio, del non sciupare, del recuperare il recuperabile, del cambiare uso ad ogni cosa all’occorrenza. Ma anche la cultura del produrre pensando, proponendo soluzioni diverse, mentre si esegue un determinato lavoro. Le quantità non industriali, di ciascun articolo rendono la lavorazione sempre diversa, ciascuna volta da imparare e da capire. Il Cashmere come le altre materie prime, sono scelte nelle migliori aziende, italiane e scozzesi. Tutto rigorosamente a fibra lunga e sottilissima per trasmettere a chi lo indossa, il calore, la morbidezza e la leggerezza del Cashmere e delle mani che gli hanno dato forma. Ogni capo viene rifinito nei particolari più nascosti, perché abbiamo imparato che il valore sta nelle piccole cose.		But Melys is much more! It is the brand of “well made” things, as people used to say in the past; of those things that had to be long lasting. Those “good” things whose wear and tear would tell something about the people who had worn them, about their habits and ways of life. Once, every house in the countryside had a knitting machine and every woman was able to knit and crochet. This tradition is nowadays part of Melys and is kept up by women who have been working by hand with passion and pride every day for more than 35 years; women who had learnt their trade from their grandmothers for fun, tradition and culture. Crocheting used to be a sort of meditation, a private time when women could relax and prepare the bottom drawer for their daughters. I’m thinking about Graziella; people say she can do any sort of things with her hands. Or about Delfina, who is able to create, during her spare time, the most beautiful things with production rejects. Melys is the culture of saving, of avoiding waists, of recycling what can be recycled, of changing the way of using things depending on the needs; but also the culture of producing while conceiving and proposing different solutions to be adopted in the carrying out of different tasks. The non-industrial quantities of each item allow the manufacture to be always different. The manufacture, therefore, needs to be learnt and understood from time to time. Cashmere, as the other raw materials, is selected in the best factories of Italy and Scotland. The fibre is rigorously long and extremely fine, in order to give the warmth, the softness and the lightness of Cashmere, and of the hands that shaped it. Each item is finished.
LO STILE		STYLE
Lo stile Melys è affidato a due inglesi Lois & Kristopher, amanti dell’Italia e di un’ elegante sobrietà, ricca di particolari che rendono il capo un oggetto da scoprire, da indossare, per sentirsi bene. Ma risente anche del rapporto nativo con la Francia e con Parigi. La donna Melys è delicata, colta e defilata; non ama gli eccessi, e il suo abbigliamento rappresenta una condizione mentale ancor prima che fisica.		Melys owes its style to two English stylists, Lois and Kristopher, who love Italy and have a taste for an elegant but rich in details sobriety, that makes each item become something new to discover and wear, something that makes you feel good. But Melys style is also influenced by the original relationship with France and Paris. A Melys woman is delicate, learned and discreet; she does not like excesses, and clothing represents for her a mental state more than physical one.
